Halloween Pronunciation Guide

Find out how to pronounce words associated with Halloween and El Día de Los Muertos

Halloween, or Hallowe'en is a celebration observed in a number of countries on October 31, the eve of the Western Christian feast of All Hallows' Day.

It is widely believed that many Halloween traditions originated from Celtic harvest festivals which have pagan roots. Nowadays Halloween activities include trick-or-treating (or guising), attending Halloween parties, carving pumpkins, lighting bonfires, apple bobbing, playing pranks, visiting haunted attractions, telling scary stories and watching horror films.

It's currently a festival celebrated mainly in Anglo-Saxon countries although it has spread recently around the world. Also closely associated with Halloween in Mexico is the Day of the Dead (or Día de los Muertos). This focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died, and help support their spiritual journey.

In this guide we bring together some of the most used words and terms relating to Halloween and the Day of the Dead to help you pronounce them.
